The designer vs the craftsman or the folk artist… Two seemingly remote planets, functioning parallel to one another in the contemporary world. Often not comprehending the other’s choices and values. But when their paths cross, they can have much to offer one another. This exhibition stands as proof – it shows the results of designers being immersed in worlds they had yet to explore, meeting and working with master craftsmen, people for whom materials such as wool, glass, and wood have yielded all their secrets. Regardless of whether these are Beskid artisans or master craftsmen from Turkey or from Opole. Each meeting might provide an opportunity to forge relationships, learn history, and gain abilities brought by new products and even services. In “journeying to the sources” designers discovered traditional techniques and natural materials so as to speak of them in a new way, in the language of the contemporary consumer.
These meetings between craftspeople and designers were organized by Zamek Cieszyn – a center for design and entrepreneurship. This institution has been active on the Polish/Czech border for ten years, in a region rich in handcraft traditions, which it is trying to explore and reinterpret.
The Design at the Source exhibition highlights products and services created in the past year, thanks to several initiatives by Zamek Cieszyn and its partners in which designers and craftsmen worked hand-in-hand.
